Birdsong Orchards
This land was originally an apple and dairy farm in the 1950s-60s, but has been unused since the 1980s. Our goal is to plant a permanent fruit tree orchard to the highest organic standards. We plan to enrich and nurture the holistic health of this land to encourage biodiversity and environmental balance while growing the highest quality and tastiest produce. Our orchard celebrates the incredible diversity of human tree crops bred and refined over the millennia from all over the earth. We currently are proud to raise over 175 varieties of fruit trees as well as dozen of shrubs and perennial flowers. By growing for diversity, we hope to weather the changes in climate and taste, while providing data and learning to our farming community. We also raise a small mixed herd of llamas, alpacas and goats, to generate our own fertilizer on the farm, help recycle orchard prunings and weeds, produce dairy for our own use, and add to the general cuteness of the world. Birdsong Orchards is the brain and love child of Nadine Schaeffer and Jason Wehmhoener. After 40 cumulative years designing software, we are now turning some of our time and energy into designing a sustainable farm. Leave a Reply Cancel reply
