Borneo Divers

At Borneo Divers we take our corporate social responsibility very seriously as we believe that we have a duty of care to help and support those less fortunate around us, whether it be within our communities or our environment which we strive to protect. So, when we had the opportunity to work with a group of orphaned and socially challenged young boys and girls from Kota Maruda, it was an activity that group CEO, Datuk Admund Looh Chai Boon was very eager for the team to engage in. Therefore, on 2nd May, at 6am a total of 70 young people aged between 5 years - 21 years old from St Theresa and De la Salle sheltered housing and hostels from Kota Maruda set off on a whirl wind adventure of education and fun courtesy of Borneo Divers and other generous sponsors, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Yan from Kota Maruda and D'Honey Sweet Chicken Rice Shop. These young people come from low-no income single parent families or have found themselves in orphan situations. They are young people who do not or cannot afford to go to school, they often speak their own dialect and with minimal reading and writing skills. The hostels do an amazing job at educating these less affluent children and young people, however, Borneo Divers wished to enhance their learning by funding a field trip to remember. The day of education and team building began by coaching the young people to Tuaran Crocodile Farm where they got up close and personal with some of Borneo's snappier wildlife, together with a tour of the University of Malaysia where they learnt about the power of education and how it can help shape their future. Following a group McDonalds lunch, the young people then spent a fun-filled educational afternoon at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park which concluded with a sumptuous sponsored dinner at D'Honey Sweet Chicken Rice Shop in Putatan. Over dinner, 29 of the brightest most aspiring young people from the group were given study awards for outstanding effort and achievements in their schooling studies. It was clear from the smiling faces and constant chitter-chatter from these bubbly young people that it certainly had been a day to remember. One young person in particular shone above the rest with some of the most amazing results never seen before. Kilina Lawrence, an STPM student received an award for all of her efforts, presented by Borneo Divers Group Financial Controller, Chew Peck Kim. For Borneo Divers, this type of educational field trip is an essential part of the learning process that all children should be able to have access to, encompassing the European ethos that "every child matters" and that nobody should be excluded from. "We have been honored to have the opportunity to engage with and treat these amazing young people", said Borneo Divers Group Financial Controller, Chew Peck Kim. She, added, "it is clear that these bright eyed kids have taken a lot away from the activities today which we hope they will go back with and further enhance their learning. Borneo Divers certainly look forward to supporting and facilitating the mentoring of our local community". The young people personally thanked Borneo Divers, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Yan and D'Honey Sweet Chicken Rice Shop for their generosity, hospitality and the amazing opportunity that they had been given to experience life outside of their normal routines. Borneo Divers would like to take the opportunity to thank the staff and caretakers of the respective homes for allowing the young people such an opportunity, namely Sister Rose, Ms., Merda, Ms. Rainih, Ms. Esmeralda and Mr. Adrian. Your young people, so well behaved and so engaging are a credit to you all. Both homes are very much heavily dependent of the generous sponsorship and support from members of the public to give these young people the quality of life that they truly deserve. Do you feel that you would also like to make a difference to the lives of some of our communities less fortunate social groups?
