Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority owns and manages some of the State's most significant assets, including Sydney's heritage and cultural precincts at The Rocks and Darling Harbour. A global leader in place making, the Authority's vision is to make extraordinary places the world talks about by preserving and enhancing the inter-generational value of the State, heritage and cultural assets it manages. Its main roles are: place management heritage conservation urban renewal custodian of NSW's most significant harbour foreshore areas. The Foreshore Authority also protects and enhances the natural and built environments by providing security, cleaning, building maintenance and other asset management services, manages significant commercial and retail leases through an outsourced model, and cares for close to 100 items on the NSW State Heritage Register. Every year, the Authority brings Sydney's foreshore to life with a colourful mix of some of the city's biggest and most popular events, contributing significantly to the NSW visitor economy and making the precincts the popular destinations they are today - together, The Rocks and Darling Harbour attract more than 40 million visitors annually. SHFA was formed in 1999 under the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority Act, 1998 to consolidate the work and functions of City West Development Corporation, Darling Harbour Authority and Sydney Cove Authority.
