The Carlsberg Foundation
The Carlsberg Foundation is one of the world's oldest industrial foundations, founded by Brewer J.C. Jacobsen in 1876. Through support for outstanding basic research, the Carlsberg Foundation works to improve the world in which we live - now and in the future. The Carlsberg Foundation is the principal shareholder in Carlsberg A/S. From the outset, it was the Brewer's wish that the Foundation should donate proceeds from the brewery's beer sales to basic research within the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. It is the Foundation's vision to manage the legacy of the Brewer such that his thinking and ideas, and the Foundation's Charter, are honoured, adapted to the present day and help shape the future of science and society. The Foundation currently awards research grants worth around DKK 300 million annually.
