Catapult Distribution

At Catapult, we utilize Amazon's EC2 and S3 cloud network for much of our system operations. Most people think Amazon just sells books...but they actually operate one of the most powerful cloud networks in the world used by many fortune 500 companies. Being in the "cloud" is imperative to our day to day operations. We deliver Terabytes of data every month to all of the major music stores which requires incredibly fast bandwidth as well as redundant storage of all of our artist's and label's content. All of our servers exist in Amazon's cloud network. And at a moment's notice, we can launch new servers within seconds if the need arises. For example, yesterday we needed to re-encode a batch of tens of thousands of audio files to use with our new Catapult Media Player. We calculated that doing this on a single server would require about 60 days of processing time! So what did we do? We simply launched 20 servers in our Amazon EC2 network and spread the work load across all of them. What was going to take 60 days could now be done in only 36 hours.
