We supply fresh, vine-ripened produce farmed organically in a natural way with no pesticides to the existing system of free food distribution in Central Florida. This high-quality, vitamin-rich produce is delivered to the distribution center of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida which currently serves an estimated 450 non-profit organizations. Delivery to the food bank takes place within one-to-two days after harvest, allowing distribution to those in need while the produce is still fresh. (This cuts down on the pounds upon pounds of produce that is often lost to rot due to a lack of refrigeration or receipt of food too close to the end of its shelf life.) The fresh, nutritious food grown by 1-800-Charity Farms is used by homeless shelters to provide healthy meals to the guests residing at their facilities, helping to upgrade the quality of service and care the shelters provide. Our produce is grown organically on 35 irrigated acres in Kissimmee, which is staffed by 1-800-Charity Farms personnel engaged in day-to-day labor of planting, harvesting, processing and delivery. Seasonal volunteers are engaged as needed. Funding for the farming operation comes in part from charitable donations by individuals and corporate sponsors. The typical types of vegetables that this farm currently grows includes -- but is not limited to -- zucchini, yellow squash, okra, broccoli, greens, turnips, cucumbers, green beans, potatoes, beets, winter squashes, sweet potatoes, carrots, onions, watermelon and cabbage. These vegetables are cleaned and packed at the farm before delivery to the central clearinghouse for distribution. 1-800-Charity Farms is a project of The Original 1-800-Charity Cars. Established in 1996, Charity Cars, Inc. is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, and the first charity of its kind in the nation. One of its missions is to provide a free vehicle and vehicle support services to assist disadvantaged families in their transition from dependency to self-sufficiency.
