City of Camden
The City of Camden, founded in 1732, is South Carolina's oldest inland municipality. The City is located in the central portion of the state, within the area often referred to as "the midlands" of South Carolina. The City is the county seat of Kershaw County, and it is located approximately thirty miles northeast of the City of Columbia. In 2007 the City completed the Downtown Vision Plan and since has carried out several projects related to the plan. The first project, the Camden Town Green, involved transforming the former "East Back Lot" parking lot into a multi-adaptive reuse parking lot/park/festival venue in the heart of downtown. The second project, the Broad Street Road Diet, is currently underway and involves the reduction of Broad Street from four lanes to two lanes from York Street to DeKalb Street. The project is proposed to be constructed upon completion of the US 521 Truck Route project. While these projects serve as the starting point for the redevelopment of downtown, it is expected that several other improvements will be needed. These include, increasing parking opportunities downtown, creating aesthetically appealing pedestrian and vehicular alleyways, and enhancing the corridors that serve as the gateways into and out of the City.
