City of Portland
We were originally Richland Station, named for the railroad depot erected here for the then-new Louisville and Nashville Railroad, with its first scheduled stop in the small settlement on October 31, 1859. Because there was confusion later with another Richland on the railroad lines, Richland Station was renamed Portland in 1888, and then incorporated in 1905. The first election was also held for a mayor and board of aldermen at that time. The City of Portland does not discriminate based on race, color or national origin in federal or state sponsored programs, pursuant to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (42 U.S.C. 2000d).
