City of Sun Prairie
We are privileged to offer you information regarding the procedures of our court. We understand that for most people the judicial system is a confusing and intimidating process. It is our goal to make this process more accessible and therefore less stressful for you. Please take some time and view our site. We hope that after doing so many of your questions will be answered. Remember, this is a work in progress and we welcome your comments and suggestions. The Sun Prairie Municipal Court was established in 1868 and it is a limited jurisdiction court of record, which adjudicates criminal misdemeanor charges which have been adopted by ordinance (e.g., battery, criminal damage, and possession of less than 25gm of marijuana), and non-criminal traffic violations committed by adults and juveniles within the City. In addition, the court has truancy hearings and holds "parking" court one day a month. We are a non-jury court with bench trials only. The more serious criminal misdemeanors are sent to Dane County court for state charges, as are all felonies and traffic crimes.
