CodeRVA Regional High School
The CodeRVA Humanities department is fully devoted to creating an innovative, integrated curriculum that adheres to the state standards for History and English. In order to do so, as a department, we use the VDOE Curriculum Frameworks for History as our base and layer on the VDOE English Standards of Learning based on the outlined essential understandings. As a department, one of our most important objectives is to incorporate primary sources, nonfiction pieces, poems, short stories, and excerpts of literary works that pair with our historical lessons. For example, when planning a unit on Latin American geography (standard WG.6 states, "The student will analyze the characteristics of the Latin American and Caribbean regions by a. identifying and analyzing the location of major geographic regions and major cities on maps and globes; b. describing major physical and environmental features; c. explaining important economic characteristics; and d. recognizing cultural influences and landscapes."), we may ask students to read excerpts from one or more of the following works: Eleven by Sandra Cisneros, Cesar Chaves: His Fight for the Farm Workers by Barbara Bloom, "Women Getting More Recognition in the Latin Music Scene" by the Washington Post, or The Open Boat by Stephen Crane. Please feel free to contact any member of the department with questions.
