The Daily Californian

The Daily Californian is an independent, student-run newspaper that serves as Berkeley's paper of record and trains students in areas of journalism, business and other professional industries. Students hold all editorial positions-including writing, photography, design, copy editing and illustrating-as well as most business positions. The Daily Cal is one of the few college newspapers that is completely independent of the university that it covers and the only independent college newspaper in the UC system. The paper supports itself with advertising revenue, and it does not receive any financial support from the ASUC or the university itself. The Daily Cal earned its independence in 1971 (a century after it began its operations in 1871) when the paper's senior editorial board published a controversial editorial on People's Park. The Daily Cal prides itself on being the best source of journalism training on campus, as well as a nearly $700,000 operation led by students and future business leaders. In 2011, the Society of Professional Journalists declared the Daily Cal the Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper in California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii.
