Finncare
We continue to provide work experience for many students from Finland in the area or nursing, physical therapy & social services. This gives our residents and clients wonderful opportunities to interact with younger people from 'home'. These students also offer wide-ranging support to our hard working staff. Now more than 27,000 people living in Australia claim Finnish heritage and of these 8,200 were born in Finland. This group is spread throughout all states and territories of Australia. AFRHA draws residents to our facility in Thornlands from all corners of Australia. AFRHA currently operates a branch of our Finncare service in the ACT to provide home care services to Finns in Canberra. These services are currently delivered by a hard working voluntary team of people working with guidance from the local Coordinator. Finns in Melbourne operate the 'Finnish Friendly Visiting Service' which is situated in Altona. Although there is no formal connection to AFRHA this group provides a valuable social network for the members of the Finnish community in Melbourne. Currently 27 per cent of Finns in Australia are over the age of 65. AFRHA provides an invaluable service to this group, giving individuals many choices in care as they age.
