Fischer Furniture
Fischer Furniture started in 1949 as a small secondhand store across the street from our present location on West Main Street. When Sam Fischer moved to South Dakota from California in 1949, he was chasing the American dream, to build a home and a life for himself and his family. Sam and his wife, Helen, moved to Rapid City, where he started his first Fischer the Woodpecker store on West Main Street. It was a humble beginning, to say the least. Sam sold everything from "mousetraps to bulldozers" and more. He splashed his slogan across the side of his building, "I buy and sell used furniture like a wildman! As his business began to grow, Sam moved across the street to build the store at 1802 West Main Street by hand in 1954. Sam was joined in business by his son, Robert in 1974, and together, the two opened Fischer Home Galleries and Fischer Clearance Center. Sam always loved the furniture stores and continued to come into work well into his eighties. He passed away in 1996, and Robert operated the stores until 2004, when his son Sam moved his family home from California to join his father in business. Today, the store Sam "Fearless" Fischer built on West Main Street has been remodeled to better serve customers in the Rapid City and greater Black Hills area. Fischer Furniture's main store, located at 1802 West Main Street in Rapid City, built by hand by Sam "Fearless" Fischer in 1954, had 44,000 square feet of retail space, and showcased both traditional and contemporary furniture in all categories, from dining rooms to bedrooms, living rooms, mattresses and more. In 2006, Fischer Furniture purchased the retail space next door to the current store, and began a construction project to completely remodel the existing store and unify the two storefronts, creating a furniture store with 80,000 square feet of showroom space. We celebrated the Grand Opening of the new space in May and June of 2009, with a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 3, 2009. The updated features of the space, including an elevator for basement access, will provide you with a more comfortable shopping experience. Along with making you feel at home in our home, we also want to give you the most value for your money. Sam "Fearless" Fischer's original business philosophy of presenting you quality furniture at the lowest possible prices continues to be our business model 60 years later. Store Front
