Gwilym Hughes & partners was founded in April 1970 by Gwilym Hughes, Gethin Davies and Clive Jones, all of whom were previously partners in the Wrexham Solicitors Firm of Cyril Jones & Co. Mr Peter Butler and Mr Stephen Edwards both served their articles with the firm. Mr Butler became a partner in 1980 and Mr Edwards in 1984. Mr Gethin Davies, who lives in Llangollen, combined his work at Wrexham with attendances at the Llangollen office. On 1st July 1991 the partnership expanded their practice further and acquired the firm of Messrs Charles Richards and Sons of Llangollen and now practises from their offices at Bank Buildings, Llangollen. In September 1996 the Partnership merged with Messrs Edmund Pickles and Upton. The Partnership now owns all of the buildings in a large triangular area at the junction of Grosvenor Road and Rhosddu Road, Wrexham and these have been re-developed and interconnected to form a large office complex. The Firm has grown over the last 30 years into a practice of approaching 100 staff. In 1999 Mr Gwilym Hughes retired as a partner but continued his involvement with the Firm as a consultant until his complete retirement in 2002. In November 2000, the Partnership merged with Brown & Lloyd of Oswestry. Alan William Brown who had previously been a Lecturer in the College of Law at Chester founded Brown & Lloyd in August 1980. In 1985, Mr Richard Lloyd became an Equity Partner with Mr Brown. Brown & Lloyd moved to its current address in Oswestry, namely The Albany, 37/39 Willow Street in 1985. In April 2002 Mr Gethin Davies retired as a partner but he continues his involvement with the firm as a consultant. In May 2002, Mr Robert Williams and Mr Alun Williams became Partners of the Firm. In November 2002, Mr David Cartwright joined the Firm as a Non-Equity Partner. In May 2005, Mr Robert J Edwards was made a Non-Equity Partner.
