We are very excited to have you come join us as part of our fitness community! We'd love to share a little bit about ourselves and hope to find out more about you whne you come in! NWCF has a nearly 17 year history at our current location in Greenlake! We initially opened in 2003 as a Taekwondo program aimed at training athletes who had aspirations to compete in the Olympics. The Founder, Jake Platt, was a Taekwondo Master and a strength and conditioning coach for many elite TKD athletes. He was the Head Coach for the Air Force leading up to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and was also Assistant Coach to the national team during this time. In 2005, Jake retired from his 10 year career coaching Taekwondo so that he could pursue his career in fitness. From here, he was introduced to the CrossFit method, which at the time was in its infancy. By the summer of 2006, Jake was hooked on CrossFit. He found the functional fitness elements and the ability to track your own workouts using time domains to be consistent with his philosophy of fitness. In 2007, Northwest CrossFit was born, one of the first CrossFit gyms in Seattle and one of the first 100 gyms in the world. In 2009, Northwest CrossFit won the Affiliate Cup, making them the top CrossFit Games Team in the world. In 2010, NWCF, along with many other CrossFit affiliates, developed a holistic fitness version of CrossFit. This split created some confusion for some people since both the holistic fitness version and the sport version shared the same "CrossFit" name. In addition, as the same for many other competitive sports, some people were getting injured competing in CrossFIt events and giving CrossFit a reputation as being dangerous. What does that mean? It simply means that we are not a competition gym and although we may have some members that like to compete, we don't focus our program around competition. Instead we are driven towards providing a dynamic functional fitness program that increases performance in sport, life and work.
