An outstanding example is the innovative Jacana House commercial building on Wood Street in Darwin's Central Business District: Jacana House has achieved a 5½ Star NABERS Rating. NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System) is a national initiative managed by the New South Wales Office of Environment and Heritage. It is a performance-based rating system for existing buildings. NABERS rates up to a recently introduced 6-star level on the basis of measured operational impacts on the environment in categories such as energy, water, waste and indoor environment. The rating system for office premises is based on actual data relating to the performance of that premises over a twelve month period. As the NABERS website notes: "Property investment analyst IPD has launched its green property index, which provides evidence that Green Star and NABERS-rated buildings outperform non-rated buildings on a financial basis by a significant margin, especially at the upper end of ratings performance." Jacana House has been awarded a 5 Star Green Star - Office Design v2 certified rating from the Green Building Council of Australia which represents "Best Practice" in environmentally sustainable design and is applying for 5 Star Green Star - Office As Built v2 certified rating from the Green Building Council of Australia which represents "Australian Excellence" in environmentally sustainable design. Launched in 2002, the Green Building Council Australia is a national, not-for-profit organisation that is committed to developing a sustainable property industry for Australia by encouraging the adoption of green building practices. It is uniquely supported by both industry and governments across the country. The Green Star rating system is a comprehensive, national, voluntary environmental rating system that evaluates the environmental design and construction of buildings including offices, retail centres, industrial facilities and multi unit residential properties.
