Rocking Horse is a small quality producer of Napa Valley Ultra Premium red wines. When established in 1989, production was limited to 600 cases. Born from the desire to produce the absolute best wines from legendary growing regions, Jeff and Nancy Doran began their quest moving quietly from a backyard bottling line to their current 8,000 case production level. Extreme care is taken to marry the proper vineyard site and appellation with the appropriate varietals. Trademark wines are typically "made in the vineyard" and picked at optimum ripeness to ensure a silky full mouth feel and dark crimson purple hue. Each wine is true to its varietal character and offers many layers of complexity. Properly aged wines will be rewarded by cellaring. The name Rocking Horse was developed over time from an in-house collection of art, a sense of belonging and a playful reminder of dreams come true. Memorable in nature yet understated by design, the name touches the heart of Americana and lingers on... well after the evening's wonderful meal. Early in the building years a conscious decision was made to purchase fruit from growers and let them do what they do best. Rocking Horse wines are currently made at a custom crush facility in Napa Valley, which allows for a lower average overhead, affordable prices and rapid long-term growth. Once the plateau of 10,000-15,000 cases is reached, a facility will be purchased and favorite vineyard lands acquired. Currently, there is no Tasting Room or Tour. Our philosophy of winemaking is very complex in nature and requires that attention be paid to every detail. There are literally thousands of decisions made throughout the winemaking process. However, extracting varietal character is our primary objective beginning with vineyard site development and moving on through the cycle of canopy management, pruning, sorting and the selection barrel types. A final "blend" typically evens out any material variations contributed by "Mother Nature" which often times include the wrath of rain, wind and snow; mountain lions, rattle snakes, bears, rabbits, birds, wild turkeys and deer; phylloxera, sharp shooters, mites and a host of other insects. Lastly, Rocking Horse wines are meant to be shared with friends and can be purchased throughout the United States and selected countries around the world.
