Holy Trinity School
Holy Trinity School, founded in 1818, is DC's oldest elementary school. There are approximately 340 students enrolled at Holy Trinity from DC, Maryland, and Virginia in three educational programs: Early Childhood Program: One class of prekindergarten students and two kindergarten classes Lower School: Two 1st grade classes and one class each of grades 2-4 Upper School: Two classes each for grades 5-8. The student body represents a mix of racial, ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds-a mixture by design and one to which the school is deeply committed. 18% of the children are from racial or ethnic minorities. Financial aid is provided to 19% of the school's students. The student-teacher ratio is 8 to 1. Holy Trinity School has a faculty of approximately 60 teachers, including homeroom teachers, assistant teachers, specialty teachers in technology, art, music, Spanish, library, physical education, and learning specialists in language arts and mathematics. The average tenure for teachers at HTS is 9 years. Approximately 50% of teachers at HTS have advanced degrees. HTS is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). In addition, HTS holds memberships with the following organizations: Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) Holy Trinity School has developed a special program for children from low-income families who have academic motivation and potential for personal growth. Named after our former pastor, The Gavigan Program provides, in addition to full tuition assistance, additional support services including tutoring, mentoring, summer school, after school tutoring/homework assistance and other services as needed that will help insure that the children will succeed in a competitive environment. The counseling program at HTS supports the school's commitment to the education of the whole child. This program is designed to assist all students in the normal process of growing up as they seek to understand themselves and their relationships. The After School Program of Holy Trinity School serves as an extension of the school day, with the same guidelines for behavior and interaction between students that takes place within the school's regular hours. The principle of respect for others and for those in authority is obvious. The After School Program runs from Monday through Friday beginning once classes end until 6:00 p.m. A healthy snack is provided each day for the students. Homework room is offered for grades 1-8 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. There is an additional charge for the After School Program, as well as some of the additional club activities offered.
