HulaKai Hotel
HulaKai Hotel was originally founded by Tyler Tibbs on 12 acres in 2002 as the Parque Maderas, Center for Art and Ecology. He lived on the property for 3 years camping and building trails, working with permaculture concepts, learning the ecology of the area; back then those days were filled with fireside evenings, the original maderas family dinners and usually a traveling musician. Tyler developed a master plan for an ecological community, which included 8 residential lots, 2 commercial lots and in the center a 5 acre center for art and ecology with art studios, artist in residence housing, wellness center and interpretive ecological trails. He first built a hostel, Parque Maderas which he ran for 5 years with his wife Massiel. They enjoyed success, however after their first son was born in 2011, Tyler realized that he would have to continue to grow. Tyler decided to build a down to earth boutique hotel, a place he always wished he would find as a lifetime backpacker. A place for graduated backpackers that carried the same vibe, values and down to earth atmosphere of his previous ventures. It was at this time his old friend and neighbor Jeremy Killan, moved back to Nicaragua from Hawaii and offered to add the neighboring lot to complete the land to be used for the boutique hotel. After finding an old long board from the HulaKai surf shop hanging in the hostel; the HulaKai Hotel was born, choosing to celebrate the Pacific waters and cultures that have connected us all. Together they share a love of Playa Maderas and the country of Nicaragua. A joy for sharing what they have created with travelers from all over the world.
