Huron School District

The Huron School District is a great place to learn. Recently, we have raised the bar on student expectations and outcomes. As a result, student performance is at an all time high. While this is good news for the many dedicated educators in the district, we still have work to do. A team of community members, parents and staff members work together in creating a vision for the district. Some of the recent positive developments in the district were recognized with the passage of a bond issue on February 20, 2001, which raised $21.8 million dollars for renovations, classroom additions, and technology. This was the first bond issue passed in the community since 1975. Under the leadership of the current superintendent, Thomas L. Hosler, who started in the district in February of 2000, and a dedicated Board of Education a new era has truly begun. The Huron Township community is one of the last rural areas of Wayne County Michigan. The Huron Schools embrace the small town values while providing students with big time educational opportunities. Because of the highly desirable schools and area, the Huron District is under siege by developers who are building new homes and developments. Since September 1999, the schools have seen their enrollment grow by nearly 18%. Huron Schools since 2000 have recommitted to serving the needs of its students and the community. The Sunnyside Kindergarten Center is a building designated exclusively for the district's kindergarten program. In 2000-2001 the district became one of the first in the area to offer an innovative "Young-Five's" Program. Also at the Sunnyside Kindergarten Center, Latch-Key and a KinderCare Plus program is available to provide parents with safe options for their educational and childcare needs. All Huron Schools are fully accredited by the North Central Association (NCA). The Michigan Department of Education's Education YES! Program has graded all Huron Schools with A's or B's. Likewise, all buildings have met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
