This is a testimony of our commitment to the growth of your business. IBEW Local 1340 offers you quality electricians that are drug-tested and safety-trained by OSHA standards. The quality healthcare and retirement plans offered to our members are our assurance of drawing you top talent for every job. Training Is The Difference! IBEW Local 1340 electricians and technicians are among our region's best-trained and most highly skilled electrical workers. This is because of our nationally recognized apprenticeship training and journeyman upgrade programs, which are maintained by the National Joint Apprenticeship & Training Center (NJATC) and certified by the United States Department of Labor - Bureau of Apprenticeship & Training. Each apprentice is required to complete five-years of classroom instruction studying electrical theory and work safety totaling 900 hours, in conjunction with a mandatory 8,000 hours of on-the-job training with the oversight of skilled journeymen. This rigorous program produces well-rounded electrical workers capable of immediate placement on your commercial or industrial project as well as any one of several other areas in which journeyman status will qualify him or her. As a signatory contractor, you'll never again have to worry about hiring poorly skilled or inadequately trained electrical workers. That's because IBEW Local 1340 runs a state-of-the-art training facility for apprentices and journeymen right in Newport News. Prior to becoming one of our apprentices, each candidate is required to demonstrate their proficiency in algebra and geometry in addition to literacy. All applicants for our program are required to have a high school diploma or GED, have passed algebra and have a valid driver's license. Each applicant is then interviewed by a joint board of local area contractors and Local 1340 electricians to learn about their interpersonal skills, attitude, work ethic, dependability and determination to complete the program. Our journeymen electricians and technicians are strongly encouraged to partake in additional programs for upgrade training to keep their skills on the cutting edge of technology. Many of these classes are offered at little or no cost. You get Hiring Flexibility! IBEW Local 1340 knows that one of the most challenging aspects of a contractor's job is trying to maintain enough work to meet payroll during lean times - and figuring out how to quickly acquire qualified workers so that you can successfully bid on challenging projects as opportunities arise. And we understand how budgetary and scheduling needs can dramatically vary from one month - even one day - to the next. As a signatory contractor, you can keep employee costs low until you have a need for an expanded workforce. The composition of your regular workforce is entirely up to you at all times. If you feel comfortable with the workers you've had for years, don't change a thing - in fact, you can take advantage of upgrade training for you current workforce, making them the most productive electrical workers possible You can add to your current team from the union pool only when you need to augment your workforce. Or reconfigure your crew altogether using Local 1340 workers. The decision is entirely yours.
