BIPT is the federal administration charged with the following duties: It is the regulator for electronic communications. BIPT has among others the task to promote competition, to contribute to the development of the internal market and to protect the users' interests. It is the postal market regulator. BIPT monitors the rates and the quality of the services of bpost and grants licences to new entrants on the postal market. It manages the electromagnetic spectrum of radio frequencies. BIPT allocates certain scarce resources, such as radio frequencies, to ensure the most efficient use of it. BIPT also fulfils the role of "wave policy" to put an end to any form of harmful interference. Actually BIPT performs monitoring tasks of the electromagnetic spectrum, operators and equipment. It is the media regulator in the Brussels-Capital Region. BIPT ensures that the operators in the bilingual Brussels-Capital Region comply with the specific regulation on radio and television broadcasting, provided that the activities of the broadcasting company cannot be specifically related to the French Community or the Flemish Community.
