Idis was founded in the UK in 1987 by two pharmacists looking for medicines that were not available on the UK market for individual patients. Idis has been the pioneer in developing access routes for patients with unmet needs, to vital medicines that were simply unavailable for whatever reason in the country where they lived. Without the aid of the internet and the vast resources of information available today, this task was undertaken by hand using a telephone, a notebook and whatever available source of information could be found. We had to first establish where the medicine was licensed and commercially available and then, find a route to the source in order to access a very small quantity of medicine, often for only one patient (named patient medicines), through a reliable and reputable provider. This wasn't an easy or automated process. It took great perseverance and the resolute determination of employees, driven by the knowledge that through their personal actions and decisions, they could directly impact, if not help save a patient's life. This was the fundamental driver of Idis in 1987 and this very much remains the case today. In the early days, our reputation evolved by "word of mouth" as pharmacists and physicians reached out first to their colleagues and subsequently to us, recommended by those in the know, to help them locate the right medicines for their patients. Over the years, awareness of who we are and what we do continued to grow around the world. In 1993, Idis developed and launched Named Patient Program services specifically designed to support the needs of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. It had become clear that companies developing new and innovative medicines were also having difficulty creating much needed routes to access for patients around the world. The demand for access outside the clinical trial and commercial setting was overwhelming their internal resources. In 2005, Idis moved to a larger, international headquarters in Weybridge, UK. In 2010, Idis established a North American headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey to better support US-based companies, physicians, and patients. Today, Idis is an international business serving patients, pharmacists, physicians and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry throughout the world in over 20 languages. The integrity of our brand lies in our reputation to successfully handle these access requests for medicines. It also reflects our ability to develop, implement and deliver a broad range of solutions in often urgent situations that have earned us the right to claim our global leadership position in a complex regulatory environment.
