IMGW-PIB operates on the basis of the act dated 25 July 1985 concerning research-development units (full text is contained in the official gazette announcing current legislation no. 44/91, para. 194 and no. 107, para. 464 with further changes). The Institute is supervised by the Minister for Environment.
