J. Henry Stuhr

J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. has provided high quality funeral services to the greater Charleston community since its beginning as "Stuhr and Bruning Cabinet Makers and Undertakers" in 1865. In 1894, Henry D. Stuhr and John A. Stuhr, sons of Henry D. Stuhr, took over the operation of the business. The firm became a corporation in 1923 with John A. Stuhr, the remaining son of the founder, serving as President. In 1936, J. Henry Stuhr and J. Albert Stuhr took over as the leaders of the family business and continued to direct it until 1982 when John Albert Stuhr, Jr., William Sanderson Stuhr, Sr. and J. Harry Stuhr, Jr. assumed the leadership mantle. In addition, fifth generation members, William Sanderson Stuhr, Jr., Timothy Wrenn Stuhr, Catherine Stuhr and Frances Stuhr joined the company. John A. Stuhr, Jr. and William Sanderson Stuhr, Sr. continue as the primary leaders of the company to this day. J. Harry Stuhr, Jr. passed away in 1996 at the age of 64. From a humble small business located at 56 Wentworth Street in Charleston, the company has now grown to five locations located in the greater Charleston area. The historic downtown chapel is on the Charleston peninsula, there is a chapel in historic North Charleston, our Northwoods campus has a chapel and two on-site crematories, the Mount Pleasant chapel and Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens were established to better serve the tri-county community, and most recently, we opened a chapel in West Ashley. The Stuhr family, along with our team of hand-selected professionals, continues to work diligently to meet our mission of providing the highest quality funeral services as you seek to honor the life of your loved one.
