He learned all he could about diamonds, and loved the whitest, brightest diamonds. David noticed the ring mountings he purchased from his suppliers had much lower quality diamonds and made huge contrast when Kelley's brilliant diamonds were placed in the center. When David asked his suppliers to manufacture the same rings with better quality diamonds, he got the same answers. "Kelley, you can't do that." "Kelley, it will cost too much." And, "Kelley, the customers can't tell the difference." David believed our customers could tell the difference and that our customers wanted a more beautiful piece of jewelry. David learned to buy and produce his own jewelry in the late 1970s. He realized the closer to the source he bought diamonds and gold, the lower the cost. David always said, "If you get a good deal, pass it on." By the end of David's life, we were buying in Israel from the world's largest diamond suppliers. We buy gold and loose diamonds direct from the source, and contract labor in the U.S.A. to put them together. This allows us to control both the quality and the cost. Kelley Jewelers lowers the cost while using more brilliant diamonds. That is the secret to our success. Offering our customers whiter, brighter diamond jewelry for a lower price than average jewelry.
