Formed in 1923, the Sanitation Districts are a non-civil service public agency created under state law to manage wastewater and solid waste on a regional scale. They consist of several independent districts serving Los Angeles County that construct, operate, and maintain facilities to collect, treat, recycle, and dispose of wastewater and industrial wastes, and also provide for the management of solid wastes including disposal, transfer operations, materials recovery, and energy recovery. The Sanitation Districts are headquartered in Whittier, California.
