Maori Boy Glass

Each item in the range is handmade to the highest quality possible using the technique 'slumping & fusing'. Our work also features unique and original designs show-casing a modern interpretation of traditional Maori design. All the designs are created by Monty Kirkman who has a passion for glass as an artistic medium. Monty designs each piece to be a work of art, while still being functional and robust enough to be used day-to-day. And every design has a story behind it - either imparting something from life experiences or Monty's interpretation of Maori taonga (treasures). We produce a range of glass platters, bowls, clocks, coasters and wall hangings. The technique of 'fusing and slumping' sandwiches a design of "onglaze powder" between two pieces of clear glass, which is then fused together at high temperature. The transparency of the top layer lends the design depth and enhances the vibrancy of each colour. Low fire "glaze" is traditionally used by ceramists as a 'second' firing over underglaze on fired pots. Low fire glaze will fire into glass using a very careful firing process aided by a 'proprietary formular' of frits and additives to promote compatibility, stability of the fusing process, and to enhance the vibrancy of the colours. We also use the glaze 'dry' and not in a liquid form. Hopefully you will enjoy the designs as much as we've enjoyed creating them. Contact Home
