Mathews Dinsdale has always been at the forefront of social change. In fact, Beatrice Lyons, one of the first women in Canada to become a partner in a law practice, co-founded the firm, joining forces with Norman Mathews to form a law partnership in 1937. During the Second World War, Bea Lyons and Norm Mathews regularly appeared before the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, an administrative tribunal responsible for inflationary control during the war. When several Orders in Council were made under the War Measures Act, they became involved in an early form of union recognition and collective bargaining. This experience established them as experts in these issues before the Wartime Prices and Trade Board. It was also valuable experience they could build on. Through the war years, Canada, and especially Ontario, began its transformation from an agricultural to an urban industrial society - which brought with it new challenges presented by trade unions and collective action by employees. During this time, Bea and Norm became well known for successfully helping businesses navigate this new terrain. In 1956, Bea Lyons and Norm Mathews, now married, entered into partnership with Stanley Dinsdale and Allan Clark. That year, the Firm of Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark was created, becoming the first law firm in Canada, and one of the first in North America, to dedicate its practice to representing employers in workplace law matters. In 2012, Mathews Dinsdale achieved another first, becoming the only boutique workplace law firm in Canada with offices in multiple provinces. In October of that year, Mathews Dinsdale opened an office in Vancouver, uniquely positioning Mathews Dinsdale to provide national and regional clients across Canada with expert advice on workplace law. Mathews Dinsdale further expanded the scope of its services in 2013 by adding CompClaim to its team. Established in 1988, CompClaim consists of a group of legal and medical professionals dedicated to assisting employers with the full range of workers' compensation and occupational health and safety matters. This unique arrangement provides employers with a one-stop shop for workplace safety issues.
