Morupule Coal Mine
Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) is a coal mining company located on the outskirts of Palapye in the Central district of Botswana. MCM is 100% owned by the Government of Botswana under the Minerals Development Company Botswana. MCM has been mining coal in Botswana since 1973. The Mine changed its name from Morupule Colliery to Morupule Coal Mine in 2011. The Company has a mining license (4/76) which covers an area of approximately 425km2. The lease area contains an estimated total Coal Resource of approximately 2.9t billion. The current operation is structured to produce 2.8 million tonnes per annum ("Mtpa") from underground operations. The coal seam has low sulphur and ash content with average heat value of 23.0MJ/Kg. Morupule Coalfield has 3 main economically viable seams, namely: Number 2 Seam, Morupule Marker Seam and Morupule Main Seam. Each one of them has slightly various characteristics which suits various operations. However, all of them are well known for the good calorific value, low sulphur content and low phosphorus content. The current underground mine focuses on the Morupule Main Seam while the envisaged Open Cast mine will extracts all 3 seams.
