PENOBSCOT RESPIRATORY

PENOBSCOT RESPIRATORY

Penobscot Respiratory is a private practice located on the campus of Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC). Our practice staffs the 24-bed ICU at EMMC on a 24-hour basis meeting the Leapfrog Group specifications for ICU coverage. In addition to staffing, a member of our group is the medical director for the ICU at EMMC. A virtual ICU at EMMC provides critical care services for our region. The medical director is a partner in Penobscot Respiratory. Our referral area is the northern two-thirds of Maine - about one-half million covered lives. Since many patients come to us from hours away, the hospital has been provided with both ground and air transportation. EMMC is the only tertiary-care hospital in the region. The patients in the ICU have a high index of disease severity. We manage or co-manage all of the medical and most of the surgical cases admitted to the ICU. Our group is the critical care leader in the hospital as well as the region. We have a close relationship with the Trauma Surgical group that maintains a Level II trauma center at EMMC. Penobscot Respiratory provides an active Pulmonary consult service for EMMC. Our Pulmonary Clinic sees most of the Pulmonary cases in the region. About one-third of the patients have cancer or masses. One-third of the patients have interstitial lung disease or vasculitis. The remaining patients have dyspnea, asthma or emphysema. This patient mix makes the practice most challenging. One of our partners runs a TB clinic, and another partner runs the adult cystic fibrosis clinic. We are closely associated with the Thoracic Oncology Clinic. Bangor and northern Maine have a four-season New England climate. The Bangor schools are rated highly nationally. The University of Maine is in an adjoining town. Music, theatre, and the Arts are well-represented in this small city. All in all Bangor is a lovely place to live and work. The Auxiliary to the Penobscot County Medical Society promotes friendships and community ties within the medical staff. From time to time, our group does recruit new members. The group is diverse in age, gender, and national origin. Please contact our search consultant Celena Knapp for further details.
