Founded in 1976, Mid-Atlantic Emergency Associates, MEMA, is a physician owned practice providing emergency and acute medical care throughout greater Charlotte and the Piedmont area of North Carolina. MEMA employs a democratic system of operation. Elections are held biannually to the positions of: President & CEO, Vice President, and Board of Directors. The administrative office conducts operations and finance with a dedicated and well-qualified staff. The ultimate responsibility of group management, decision-making and leadership falls to the elected Board of Directors. Board of Directors, Medical Directors, Officers, and office staff are all accessible to any MEMA provider for assistance and to listen to comments and opinions. The Officers and Medical Directors also work closely with the leadership on the hospital side towards excellence in patient care and customer service. The strength of MEMA lies within its' membership. The success and growth of the group is based on a history of providing quality physician services and a continued commitment and dedication to excellence in emergency care. Our practice is supported by outstanding clinical practitioners and by strong leaders in Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. MEMA has, within the group, 23 current or former Medical Directors/Assistant Medical Directors, 19 former Chief Residents, 11 former Attending Physicians from Academia, 2 Past-Presidents of the NC College of Emergency Physicians, 2 current and 2 former members of the NC College of Emergency Physicians Board of Directors, 1 former Chief of Staff, 1 former Presbyterian Healthcare Physician of the Year, 1 representative to the American College of Emergency Physicians Reimbursement Committee, and 1 member of the North Carolina Medical Board. There are currently 45 MEMA physicians. All physicians are Board Certified/Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, or a Primary Care Specialty, several are double boarded. 37 physicians are shareholders. MEMA has 24 Advanced Practice Providers, APPs, including both Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners. The future path for MEMA is one of controlled growth in partnership with healthcare facilities and other quality physician groups throughout the Carolinas.
