Mer-Sea
MERSEA is a non-profit organization established in 1996, to conduct research, identify whales, and to inform and educate as many people as possible about whales and the marine environment. Mission: To conduct research and provide education on whales and the marine environment. It is only through research and education that awareness and long lasting protection can be established. Very little study and almost no documentation on Humpback Whale sightings and behavior has been conducted in the Juneau area of Southeast Alaska. We believe that through research and work with the public, real progress can be made in understanding the marine environment, not only in our area but also around the world. Since 1996, we have reached people from all around the world and throughout the United States. Much of this contact has been made through local whale watching tours. These tours provide a special opportunity to educate interested people about whales and the marine environment. MERSEA does not conduct tours but can direct interested people to professional whale watching companies. MERSEA does not endorse any specific company. MERSEA serves the public and the whales through education about whales and whale watching techniques and procedures. In addition we have been able to work with and educate school age children about the marine environment, its use and misuse, and the life within it, including the whales, with which they are thoroughly impressed. It is through the young people, our efforts to educate, and your support that our children's heritage can be preserved. MERSEA is a non-profit organization. It is currently supported solely by membership dues, donations and its adopt-a-whale program.
