MacVEAN LEWIS
MacVEAN, LEWIS, SHERWIN & McDERMOTT, P.C. is one of the oldest law firms in the Hudson Valley. It traces its roots back to 1885, when Thomas Watts founded the firm. Back then, Middletown was a major railroad hub, and the firm represented the Ontario & Western and Erie Railroads. In 1891, MLS&M incorporated Orange County Trust Company; it has represented the bank ever since. The firm has represented a number of other clients for decades. The firm's former members include John Bright, a former United States District Court Judge; Thomas Haddaway, a former Orange County Surrogate; Kenneth MacVean, former Corporation Counsel for the City of Middletown and President of its Common Council; and Peter Striphas, the former Orange County Attorney and an architect of Orange County's current form of government. In 1977, the firm moved into its current location, a spacious late-19th century Victorian home, which was converted from a doctor's office and residence and extensively renovated. If you come by the office, don't hesitate to ask for a tour. Since its beginnings some 130 years ago, MLS&M has provided a high quality of representation to its individual, commercial and not-for-profit clients in all areas of the law.
