Mr. System
Sadly, many businesses are run like an everyday emergency. The typical modern workplace favours busyness over depth. It prioritises short-term bursts of activity in place of long-term sustainable pro...gress. And despite countless technological innovations and advancements in scientific research, the status quo remains one of shallow, reactive and distracted work. This all seems to be underscored by a lack of supportive systems, a reliance on constant connectivity and an abundance of overly bureaucratic procedures. It seems like more and more of our time is spent on inefficient, low-value tasks like email or, worse, wasted altogether – thanks to the many pointless meetings, avoidable mistakes and duplication of work. Not only does this cost vast sums of money, it also lowers workplace engagement and job satisfaction, while simultaneously holding people back from growing and progressing in their careers. But perhaps most importantly to the organisation, it stifles the very creativity behind the products and services that customers pay for. This, is the seemingly inescapable and rather depressing reality for many of today’s knowledge workers – a reality that cannot be solved by simply working longer or harder (that runway ran out a long time ago). But hard work shouldn’t be the solution, anyway. More often than not, the people who thrive in today’s economy are not those who work harder, but rather those who work smarter. Unfortunately, though, many talented and highly capable individuals just don’t have the freedom and support they need to excel at solving important problems and producing great work. I believe that with the right systems, the right tools, the right knowledge and the right culture, it’s astonishing what is possible. That’s why I work with teams and organisations to adopt the systems, processes, tools, principles and methodologies necessary to enable individuals do their best, most fulfilling work.
