Mt. Vernon ISD comprises almost all of Franklin County, in rural northeast Texas. The school is located in Mt. Vernon, Texas, which is on Interstate 30, 100 miles east of Dallas and 80 miles west of Texarkana. Franklin County consists of approximately 5,000 residents, about half of which live in the town of Mt. Vernon. The county is one of the smallest in Texas. Mt. Vernon ISD is the only school district in the county and covers almost all the county. There are four schools in the district all located on one campus. The clientele of the district is economically and culturally diverse. There is a total of 1489 students enrolled in Mt. Vernon ISD. 78.3% of those students are while, 6.2% African Americal, .7% Native American, 6.2% Hispanic, and .1% Asian-Pacific Islander. 34.5% of the students in Mt. Vernon ISD are economically disadvantaged, 5.6% are Limited English Proficiency. Many of the families in the district have limited resources and many of our students are not exposed to cultural experiences that exist in urban areas. Many families also have limited access to technology even though the district was rated Recognized by the Texas Education Agency last year and Exemplary for the two years prior to that. The major employers of the area are Lowe's Distribution Center, Jordan Health Services, Carlton Manufacturing, East Texas Medical Center, Huntington Pacific Tile, and Mt. Vernon ISD.
