National Theatre of Scotland

Founded in 2006, the National Theatre of Scotland has swiftly established itself as one of the world's most exciting theatre companies. We were the first national theatre company in the world to take the radical decision not to have its own building and to exist entirely as a touring company. This unique 'theatre without walls' model has allowed us to share some of our best work with American audiences. Our commitment to supporting new work combined with the ability to attract some of the world's most talented artists to collaborate with us has earned the Company a global reputation for creating theatre that is contemporary, confident and unforgettable. The National Theatre of Scotland first came to the U.S. in 2007, bringing Black Watch, a new play written by Gregory Burke and directed by John Tiffany, which followed the experiences of Scottish soldiers in Iraq. The response was extraordinary: on its first visit it picked up a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Foreign Play, garnered five star reviews and played to packed houses every night. Since then, together with setting up our 501(c)(3) non-profit organization National Theatre Scotland America Inc., we've taken a huge range of work to the U.S. including our bold re-imagining of Macbeth performed by Alan Cumming, the acclaimed family show The Wolves in the Walls, a daring and outrageous new version of Euripides' The Bacchae, the thrilling physicality of Beautiful Burnout and the live music and supernatural storytelling of The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart.
