The Nunacor Development
The Labrador Metis Nation incorporated Nunacor Development Corporation in 2003 to pursue economic and business opportunities for the NunatuKavut membership. In 2010, the Labrador Metis Nation was renamed NunatuKavut Community Council and, in accordance with this change, the Metis Development Corporation was renamed Nunacor Development Corporation in 2011. An Indigenous development corporation, Nunacor is made up of a group of companies involved in several industries. According to its website ( www.nunacor.com ) the corporation strives for revenue growth through strategic diversification, creating sustainable dividends as well as meaningful employment opportunities. As a NunatuKavut member, Turnbull said, he has a vested interest in seeing Nunacor succeed to benefit the community. "We are a very vibrant organization that's growing quickly. There are a lot of opportunities and optimism and a lot of freedom to take on projects that we enjoy, as long as they make sense from an Indigenous perspective," he said. Turnbull said those nominated as a top chief executive officer are asked to complete a detailed questionnaire covering everything from company growth to community involvement; from company benefits to volunteerism - both professional and personal. Nunacor is heavily involved the community, he said. "We have a community focus to everything that we do... and we give back directly to support community projects, programs and events." Turnbull is involved in numerous volunteer efforts. He is a member of the Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and volunteers on several boards. Turnbull said being recognized by Atlantic Business Magazine speaks volumes about Nunacor's growth and progress and the direction in which the corporation is heading. Revenues have grown substantially, he said, which also means an increase in staff. "I remember, not that long ago, when there were only three or four of us (staff) and now there are almost 30 of us... things are going well. There's a lot happening," he said. Turnbull said being among the top 50 CEOs in Atlantic Canada for three years in a row is "a huge honour." "Just to be on that list with great individuals from throughout Atlantic Canada that are doing such great work is an honour and is a chance to celebrate the success of our organization overall," he said. In explaining how the top 50 chief executive officers are chosen, Turnbull said, the questionnaires completed by the nominees are reviewed by a panel of judges who are in Atlantic Business Magazine's Hall of Fame. "You could win the award for five years and, in your fifth year, you can go into the Hall of Fame," Turnbull explained. He has been the youngest chief executive officer every year that he was included among the top 50. He doesn't hesitate when asked if it's a goal of his to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
