We use the latest in XRF technology to test your precious metals, resulting in pinpoint accuracy without damaging your items. The level of precision of the XRF is unparalleled by any other method, allowing us to pay you more for your items. Here are some brief explanations on how the process works: Scrap Gold/Silver/Platinum/Palladium - One of our precious metal professionals will begin with a physical exam of the items, checking for magnetic properties, coloration and markings. Next, we begin to test the pieces using our XRF machine. We do not use the traditional outdated scratch test method (which entails a stone and some strong acids) because it is not nearly as accurate and damages your items. A common problem with the scratch test is when a gold piece is slightly under karate. For example: A piece of jewelry marked 14k that is actually closer to 13k would test negative for 14k with the scratch test, but positive for 10k. The result is the customer is paid for 10k gold instead of the actual 13k value, which is approximately a 13% difference. With the XRF technology, we are able to identify the exact karat and subsequent percentage of an item and pay accordingly. After the testing process is over, you will be told what the value of your items is. We pay 85% of the melt value for your gold items. At this point, you then can sell all, some or none of the items to us. There is nothing to worry about if you choose not to sell; because all appraisals are free! Numismatics - The examination of coins will begin with one of our full time professionals sorting and separating your collection. They will then determine the value of the coins based on the date, mintmark, condition and the precious metals value. A common question at this point in the process is whether we are going to pay someone the coin (numismatic) value or the precious metals value. The answer is, "There is only one true value to a coin." If the coin is not a collectable but is made of a precious metal, then the coin is worth its weight in that precious metal. If the coin is made of a precious metal, but has some higher value due to its collectability or numismatic value, then the coin is worth the numismatic value. Our goal here at Pinehurst Coins is to educate the public. We will gladly go through your coins and explain exactly what you have and what it is worth regardless if you are selling the coins to us, or just getting an appraisal. After the appraisal process, you can decide what, if anything, you would like to sell. Selling your items to Pinehurst Coins is simple and hassle free.
