The Oyster Ltd. is a socially oriented Malawian enterprise founded in 2009 and registered under Companies Act, # 10096, with the aim of supporting local entrepreneurship and enhancing access to high-quality products which can improve the life quality in Malawian households in terms of health, environment and household economy. Starting as a village enterprise with a smallholder farming project, we soon realized the immense need for more sustainable and healthier basic energy devices and simple, yet efficient agricultural value-addition tools to increase outputs from subsistence and small-scale commercial farming. Based on several years of field-testing of multiple devices from a range of manufacturers from all parts of the world in rural and semi-urban households, we started identifying products related to these needs and test-marketed a few hundred of those with a locally suitable design and a good price-value ratio. In 2012, we established the Powered by Nature programme to help overcome the negative impacts of energy poverty in Malawi.
