Project Newsper
Project Newsper aims to fight plastic pollution by making paper bags from used newspaper as an alternative for single use plastic bags. Less than 20% of used newspapers are recycled in Malaysia, and the remaining could significantly be put to good use. On a one day mega event organised by Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) and joint project partner The Lions Club of Kuala Lumpur, over 300 volunteers spent the whole day tirelessly in making this project a reality at The Mines Shopping Mall, Seri Kembangan. We made 21,505 paper bags in a single day beginning 12.01am till 10.00pm on December 15, 2018, thereby bagging the Malaysia Book of Records for "Most Number of Paper Bags Made From Recyclable Newspapers". We have been featured on various newspapers. Recently, we have been featured on The Star and Utusan Malaysia. Our sponsors include Universiti Tenaga Nasional, College of Foundation and Diploma Studies (CFDS), Foundation Club (FC), The Star, Institut Latihan Sultan Ahmad Shah (ILSAS), Uniten Library. The paper bags produced will be distributed to public malls and the society to use. Everyone is invited to fight plastic pollution and by refusing single-use plastic bags, instead, use a paper bag at the least. Read more to learn how we pulled off this incredible feat.
