The school of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS) is among the first school to be created after the launch of the university in 2007. Late this year two of its departments i.e. Agriculture and Environmental science merged to form the school of Agricultural and Environmental Science (SAES). Members of staff in SPAS are involved in various research projects some of which are internationally funded and others are funded by nationally and regional research and development institutions. These projects are in collaborations with institutions such as: Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI-Wellcome Trust, Kilifi), Kenya Coconut Development Authority (KCDA), Technical University of Mombasa, Egerton University, University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia among others.
