Pulitzer Amsterdam
Hotel Pulitzer, Amsterdam is a canal house hotel in Amsterdam that consists of twenty-five historical canal side houses dating back to the 17th and 18th century. They have been consolidated into a very special five-star hotel situated alongside the Amsterdam canals in Amsterdam centre. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the area where Hotel Pulitzer is located was not yet built. In 1614 commissioners of the new fortification started allocating the plots of land in this block. It concerned the area situated between the Keizersgracht, the Prinsengracht and the Reestraat. Obviously the architectural details of the canal houses of the hotel have been heavily altered since the original canal houses were built almost 400 years ago. Most gables date from the mid to late 1700's although some are considerably older and a number were altered as recently as around 1850. The façades of all our houses and most ground floor entrance corridors along the Keizersgracht, as well as the monumental Saxenburgzaal (now one of the meeting rooms of the hotel) and staircase of the Saxenburghuis are listed monuments, registered with the society for the preservation of monuments. The apothecary room of the restaurant is one of only two original 17th century shop interiors remaining in the city. Herbert Pulitzer, a businessmen with a vision, spots the potential of the old dilapidated canal houses and purchases the first 10 canal houses along the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht. Over the course of 30 years the canal house hotel developed from 14 restored canal houses into a unique 5 star hotel accommodated in 25 houses. In the first half of the 1990s Herbert Pulitzer decides to sell the hotel. There are many prospective buyers, but finally the hotel is bought by Ciga, an Italian hotel chain. The hotel became part of Starwood Hotels and Resorts in 1995 as a Sheraton hotel. Between 1998 and 2000 the canal hotel in Amsterdan was completely renovated. The authentic details have all been preserved or restored, whilst modern amenities and technology were introduced to make each stay as comfortable as possible whilst offering a uniquely "Amsterdam" experience. Fully renovated, the hotel joined the Luxury Collection brand of Starwood Hotels & Resorts in 2000, a collection of renowned hotels around the world known for their unique setting and ultimate hospitality.
