Reaching U

ReachingU was founded in the USA through the initiative of a group of Uruguayans who decided to give back to their country part of what they had received through their education. When our organization was formed in 2001, there were a number of charitable Uruguayan organizations in several US cities. We decided to target Uruguayans living all across the United States. This is why from the beginning we have made great efforts to develop the necessary infrastructure to grow as an organization. We are a transparent and plural organization formed by people of different ages, with different beliefs, political and religious ideas, who work selflessly to improve life conditions in the most deprived Uruguayan sectors. In 2002, we held our first event, an auction of art and handicrafts in New York. We also launched our website, which has become a valuable tool for communicating with all our members and collaborators. We began to form work groups in various cities. In 2003, our foundation was granted the status of "non-profit organization" under IRS Rule 501c3. From then on, all donations to ReachingU became tax-deductible in states where we have the biggest presence. In 2012 we expanded our global community by adding a new chapter in Spain. A group of Uruguayans living in Madrid that believed in the possibility of bringing more and better education to children and teenagers living in poverty in Uruguay joined our efforts. Our formal working teams include directors, staff and volunteers in Los Angeles, Madrid, Miami, Montevideo, New York and Washington DC. Thanks to the commitment of its donors, ReachingU has been able to raise more than USD 7,100,000 since its creation. In 2015 we will invest USD 3,000,000 in social projects. We know we have a very powerful tool in our hands to make a real impact on Uruguayan education and that is why we want to continue to grow.
