Read Write Discover
In 2006, a team of Milpitas High School students founded Read Write Discover, then known as "Read to Succeed!". Many of the tutors who participated in the inaugural program had volunteered at a tutoring program with local elementary school students, where they recognized the need for and potential impact of tutoring and mentoring for children. After approaching the Milpitas Library staff and proposing the idea of a literacy tutoring program led by high school students, the students and librarians worked together to implement the inaugural program. The first year opened with 25 tutors and 40 students grades K through 8. Since then, Read Write Discover at its Milpitas site has expanded to serve over 120 elementary and middle school students per summer. The program itself has grown, integrating achievement charts, progress reps, and tutor-facilitated lesson plans as well as developing its trainings and evaluation process. Since 2006, however, the program has stayed true to its commitment to its learners, retaining its core structure of matched one-on-one and group tutoring and characteristic elements such as the program-wide "Big Activity" and Achievement Ceremony. Due to the positive response from the community and successful results, RWD has expanded to serve additional areas in recent years. After initially adding a second location in Fremont, the organization added eight more locations in San Jose in 2013 and five sites in San Francisco in 2014. Read Write Discover looks forward to a future of continued service to the community. Share this:
