Robogals WA

Robogals is a student-run organisation that aims to engage schoolgirls in engineering topics from a young age, with the long-term goal of increasing female enrolment in engineering, science and technology courses at universities. Our primary activity is having university student volunteers (both female and male) visit girls primary schools to run LEGO robotics workshops and other engineering related workshops with all the materials provided. We also run large interactive presentations to reach to whole school or year group. The university students are provided with the necessary training to teach LEGO robotics, and an important goal of the organization is not only to have a positive impact on the schools, but also to provide a rewarding experience for the dedicated students who volunteer their time and skills to the organization. We have a strong sense of community between our volunteers and often run social events throughout the university semester. Robogals was founded by undergraduate engineering student Marita Cheng at the University of Melbourne, and as of 2010 has chapters at the University of Melbourne, University of New South Wales, University of Queensland, University of Adelaide, University of Western Australia and Imperial College London. e also run a range of other activities around this central theme. Past events have included a robotics competition (2008) and a mass robot dance that attracted significant media coverage (2009), while future plans include science fairs, engineering camps and other initiatives. We have been featured on primetime national TV (The 7pm Project, Channel 10, 29 Sep 2009), had live interviews on ABC Radio 774 and Nova 100, made it into The Age's Odd Spot (30 Sep 2009), the Herald Sun (24 & 30 Sep 2009) and various other media. Robogals Perth has had a big year in 2013. We have taught over 1500 girls since September 2012. We have run several rural trips - to the South-West Region, Kalgoorlie and even the Pilbara. We have run several social events and attended the biggest ever SINE (Robogals Seminar) in Canberra. If you are an interested volunteer, school or parent we would love you to Contact Us!
