We offer a standards-based comprehensive physical education program with a full-sized gymnasium, dance studio, and weight-lifting room. PE teachers offer a period of physical education to all SMS students including units such as dance and weight lifting, the goal of which is to encourage students to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle through a life-long love of physical activity. In addition to the outstanding opportunities within the school day, students have a plethora of extracurricular opportunities available to them. Students are encouraged to involve themselves in extracurricular activities including league sports (flag football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, soccer, softball, cross country, and track and field). Both males and females are encouraged to tryout for sport teams. In 2003, Salida Middle School was recognized as a California Distinguished School. "Taking Pride in Excellence" is the fabric that is Salida Middle School. Our parents and staff strive to open doors to each child&s;s future by providing each student the academic, social and interpersonal skill to achieve their dreams. The focus of the development of the future leaders of America through a comprehensive academic and extracurricular program continues to this day and is a cornerstone of the academic life for the students attending SMS. Never to be satisfied with "good enough", the faculty and students at SMS continue our endeavor toward continuous improvement. The fundamental belief that all students can succeed is the driving force for improvement and there is a hunger among staff to figure out how to best meet the needs of every student attending our school.
