Scottish Wide Area Network
The Scottish Wide Area Network (SWAN) was launched in 2014; it provides connectivity to approximately 6,000 sites across Scotland including schools, hospitals, GP surgeries, pharmacists and 50 per cent of local authorities, with 250 unbundled exchanges and over 7,000km of fibre network. SWAN has 52 member organisations, including the Scottish Government, Scottish Qualification Agency, Historic Scotland, the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, and all 22 NHS Scotland boards. Since its implementation the network has provided better connectivity, better performance and faster speeds, as well as delivering value for money to the tune of £30m in savings for the Scottish taxpayer. Capita has a long-term contract to deliver the programme.
