SEI Architects

SEI Architects was honored to design a new special education center for Howard County Public School System. The Cedar Lane School is dedicated to the education of students Pre-K through 12th grade who have profound disabilities. Working with the community, staff, and students, SEI quickly realized that integration of the Cedar Lane School population with other students was ideal. We were able to achieve this goal by placing the facility on the Fulton Campus which included Fulton Elementary School, Lime Kiln Middle School and Reservoir High School. The building was designed to connect to the middle school with a shared cafeteria. To further promote peer-to-peer integration, general classrooms, a greenhouse, a horticulture classroom and a career skills classroom were built at the Cedar Lane School which are used by the Lime Kiln Middle School students. As a specialized school, SEI designed classroom clusters, a therapy pool, OT/PT room, atypical gymnasium and an employee assisted daycare facility. Working with the staff and parents of the students, SEI designed features to accommodate this particular student population including wide hallways with supervision, equipment parking and storage, as well as specialized toilet, locker, and health rooms.
