Sree Sree Swamiji is shouldering the onerous responsibility of providing free food, shelter and education to over 9000 children drawn from the poor sections of the society without discrimination on the basis of caste, creed or community at Sree Siddaganga Gurukula. In addition to this, Swamiji receives thousands of pilgrims and devotees everyday. He looks after the affairs of more than 125 educational institutions and even at the age of 110 years, Swamiji works 18 hours a day. SIT campus is spread over 50 acres and the whole area is landscaped and is lush green. Tumkur enjoys the same salubrious climate as that of Bangalore. At the time of inception, the institute was offering only 3 branches namely Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering with a total annual intake of 120. The institute is now offering 12 UG programmes with a total annual intake of 950 and 16 PG Programmes with a total annual intake of 432. 16 departments of the institute are recognised as research centres by Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, where students can register for Ph.D programme and M.Sc. by Research. 196 research scholars are pursuing their Ph.D degree in our research centres and so far 41 research scholars have obtained Ph.D degree from our research centres. All the departments in the institute have well equipped laboratories. The institute has over 2232 computers and are located in 33 Computer Centres which are all networked with fibre optic backbone. Round the clock internet facility is provided to all the Computer Laboratories, Faculty Chambers, Hostels, Class Rooms, through 250 Mbps leased line. The total number of students in the campus is over 5000 and more than 50% of the students stay in seven of our hostels. The institute has 349 well qualified and experienced faculty members out of which 113 are Ph.D holders and others Masters Degree holders. 76 more faculty members are pursuing their Ph.D programme in IISc, IITs and other reputed universities. The institute is a beneficiary of the World Bank assisted Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme Phase-I and Phase-II. SIT has the distinction of being one among the four self financing institutions across the country selected by MHRD, Govt. of India for establishment of Centre of Excellence in Applied Research and Nano Technology under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) with a grant of Rs. 5 crores.
